Funded Projects
Providing for the safety of Fort Worth is a team effort, day in and day out. The Foundation recognizes the vast majority of men and women wearing a Fort Worth badge are committed public servants, who are willing to put themselves in harm’s way so that the public is safe. Projects funded by the Foundation include:
Each May, the Foundation underwrites an event for officers and their families in recognition of exemplary service in all divisions of the Fort Worth Police Department. Highlight of the event is the presentation of the Police Officer of the Year award. Officers who are recognized receive engraved watches, and the Officer of the Year receives a firearm. The Foundation is pleased to honor our community’s police officers and their families by offering FREE zoo admission during the Annual Weekend at the Zoo, held during Mother’s Day weekend in May. Each officer presenting their badge at the designated check-in area, between 10 am and 2 pm on any one of these dates, receives two adult and two child tickets. We understand the difficulties faced by working parents and busy officers, and we believe this event is attractive to many officers and their families and provides greater flexibility for officers themselves to participate. The Fort Worth Police Department and the Fort Worth Police Officers' Award Foundation are continuing the tradition of recognizing an officer with the Thomas R. Windham Community Policing Award. Officers of any rank are nominated who have gone above and beyond his or her community duties. Nominees have worked with the Citizens on Patrol, Code: Blue Community Policing Program or local Crime Watch neighborhood organizations to help decrease crime while increasing the understanding of the police officer's role. Fort Worth Police Officers who are promoted to corporal, sergeant, detective and deputy chief are awarded engraved pen sets, portfolios, briefcases and outwear in recognition of service, respect, dedication and excellence. Read more.
Any member of the Fort Worth Police Department may nominate a sworn employee for an outstanding act or exemplary service over a period of time. The Chief of Police and the deputy chiefs review nominations and forward the names to the Foundation. Awards of Merit include: the Police Medal of Valor, Officer of the Quarter, Certificate of Merit, and Chief's Letter of Recognition. Read more.
Over the years, the Foundation has continued to recognize Fort Worth Police Department efforts to increase police officers’ marksmanship skills. In sharpshooting competition, the Foundation rewards firearm skills with the following scores:
The Foundation acknowledges that the better educated our Officers are, the better they serve our citizens in making Fort Worth the safest city in the United States. The following is a representative sampling of the training awards that have been made over the years.
In 2010, the Foundation approved funding for Traumas of Law Enforcement training for Fort Worth Police Officers. This three-day course helps to prepare officers for handling line-of-duty death, cumulative stress, and trauma including psychological/critical incident stress to address personal needs or the needs of effected co-workers. Top Police Academy Graduates receive a cash award at the conclusion of each class in recognition of their achievement and determination to be the best. Read more.
Funded beginning March 2010, officers who retire from the Fort Worth Police Department receive a gift of appreciation from the Foundation acknowledging their years of service and dedication. Read more.

The Fort Worth Police Officers’ Award Foundation is believed to be the only private organization in the nation that makes it a priority to recognize police efficiency, skill and devotion and to provide funding for training through some of the best professional law enforcement programs.
