Spotlighting Performance and Service
Decades of quiet recognition and support.
Foundation founder Edd Lott, of American Manufacturing and Mercantile Center, identified the solid on-going performance of employees in the private sector when they were recognized for jobs well done. He believed that this would be true in law enforcement and challenged 10 community leaders to support his premise by contributing to a nonprofit foundation. Each joined Lott immediately, giving significant dollars. Shortly, other business leaders followed, and the Foundation set about its work that now spans nearly three decades.
One of the first awards went to the Fort Worth Tactical Unit, a group that performed with exceptional professionalism and devotion to duty. They had recovered nearly $1 million in stolen property and made over 2,000 arrests—including 526 criminals caught in the act.
Over the years, the Foundation has hosted the annual Awards Dinner, recognized officers as they were promoted as well as “rookies” of the year, provided scholarships for elite national law enforcement schools, funded special focus seminars locally, and hosted department wide dinners and zoo weekends for officers and their families.
Today, the Fort Worth Police Officers’ Award Foundation annually honors the Officer of the Year and others at a dinner in the May. The Foundation also sponsors specialized training that would not be possible through the city’s budget. For example, an officer is sent each year to a three-month specialized course at the FBI training center in Quantico, Virginia, and officers benefit from attending the Southern Police Institute to learn modern methods to deter crime in our community. Each year the Foundation awards individual police officers who achieve a higher rank through department promotional awards.
